Course Overview: From Technique to Personal Expression
This course takes you on a step-by-step journey from learning the basics of gel printing to developing a personal visual language that’s all your own. You’ll start by building confidence with the essentials—choosing the right supplies, mastering painterly blends, ghost prints, and smooth gradients—while creating a stash of beautiful prints to work with.

From there, you’ll expand your skills with stencils, masks, botanicals, and handmade tools, discovering how simple materials can unlock endless textures, marks, and imagery. Along the way, you’ll practice layering techniques that combine colour, value, and texture with intention, learning how to troubleshoot and strengthen your prints.

As the course progresses, you’ll move beyond recipes and demonstrations into guided reflection and discovery. Through exercises and step-by-step projects, you’ll learn how to notice what excites you in your prints, identify patterns in your colour and imagery choices, and begin shaping a small series of layered works that reflect your own artistic voice.

By the end, you won’t just have a stack of prints—you’ll have a reusable toolkit of techniques, a personal library of textures and imagery, and the beginnings of a style that feels uniquely yours.

Here is What's Included:

Picture
Module 1: Building Confidence with the Basics
We’ll start by getting you set up for success—choosing the right supplies, arranging your workspace, and learning the core skills that make gel printing so rewarding. You’ll explore painterly blends, smooth gradients, and crisp ghost prints while building a stash of 30–50 beautiful prints. Along the way, you’ll discover how to work with color intentionally, troubleshoot common printing issues, and develop the confidence to experiment freely. By the end, you’ll have both the skills and the prints you need to dive into more advanced techniques.

Module 2: Colour Theory Versus Reality
In this module, we’ll bridge the gap between what the colour wheel says should happen and what actually happens on your gel plate. You’ll learn how real pigments behave—why some are transparent, others opaque, and how these properties affect layering and colour mixing. Through hands-on exercises, you’ll create your own Pigment Wheel, test your paints for transparency, and explore how to control value, hue, and opacity for more intentional results. Simple layering experiments with both analogous and complementary colours will help you build colour intuition and avoid muddy surprises. By the end, you’ll have a personal reference library of colour tests and a deeper understanding of how to make your paints work for you.

Module 3: Adding Imagery With Stencils, Masks & Botanicals
In this module, we’ll move beyond paint and texture to introduce imagery into your gel prints. You’ll learn how stencils, masks, and botanicals can add depth, pattern, and focal points—without overcomplicating the process. Step-by-step demonstrations will guide you through cutting your own stencils, printing with both direct and ghost pulls, and experimenting with plants to create striking positive and negative impressions. Along the way, you’ll test different materials, compare results, and reflect on which shapes, textures, and colours resonate most with you. By the end, you’ll have a collection of unique prints that not only showcase imagery but also begin to hint at your personal visual language.

Module 4: Creating Texture and Marks
In this module, we’ll focus on texture—the element that brings richness, energy, and variety to your gel prints. You’ll learn how to spot potential tools in everyday places, from kitchen drawers to the recycling bin, and begin building a personal library of textures. Step-by-step demonstrations will show you how to make simple handmade stamps using cardboard, foam, string, and other repurposed materials, and how to print with them in playful layers. You’ll also explore direct mark making—removing paint with brushes, spatulas, or paper towels—to create expressive, one-of-a-kind patterns. Through guided exercises, you’ll test, compare, and combine your tools, experimenting on plain paper and on backgrounds from earlier modules. By the end, you’ll have not only a collection of textured prints but also a set of reusable handmade tools that form the beginnings of your own unique visual vocabulary.

Module 5: Developing Multi-Layered Prints
In this module, you’ll bring together everything you’ve learned so far—value, colour, texture, and imagery—to create prints with depth and intention. You’ll start by reviewing your earlier work to notice which colours, textures, and techniques resonate most with you, then use these discoveries as inspiration for new layers. Step-by-step demonstrations will guide you through principles of layering, from balancing opacity and transparency to using hue, value, and placement to create harmony or bold contrast. You’ll experiment with building backgrounds on mixed media paper, then add imagery through stencils, masks, botanicals, and mark making. Along the way, you’ll learn strategies for tackling common layering challenges, like prints that feel too busy or too flat, and explore how small adjustments can transform a piece. By the end, you’ll have a collection of richly layered prints and a clearer sense of the choices and themes that are shaping your personal style.

Module 6: Working in a Series - Developing Your Visual Voice
In this final module, you’ll shift from following step-by-step techniques to exploring your own artistic voice—moving from the how to the why.

Through guided reflection, you’ll lay out your prints and notice what draws you in, whether it’s particular colours, textures, layering styles, or imagery that keep reappearing. Using the Visual Language Discovery Sheet, you’ll identify themes and patterns, then select key prints to guide your thinking: a few that feel most like “you,” some unresolved but intriguing, and even one you don’t like—and why.

You’ll revisit your tools and colours, narrowing in on the ones with the most potential, and use them to create variations and new layered prints. Step-by-step, you’ll learn how to build a small series, deepening an idea through colour, imagery, and process while embracing surprises and missteps along the way.

By the end, you’ll have the beginnings of a body of work that reflects your unique artistic direction—and the confidence and toolkit to keep developing it beyond the course.
