From learning techniques to developing your own visual language.
Creating beautiful collage papers is only half the journey. The real magic happens when you learn how to transform those papers into collages with depth, harmony, and a strong sense of design.
The Collage Studio is a step-by-step course designed to help you do exactly that. Beginning with the creation of your own collection of botanical tissue prints and supporting papers, you'll learn how to build a versatile Stash, create balanced compositions, and develop collages that feel intentional rather than accidental. Along the way, you'll explore composition and design, move from small studies to larger artwork, and gain the confidence to make stronger creative decisions.
More than anything, this course is about helping you move beyond following recipes. You'll learn how to look at your collage, understand what it's asking for next, and respond thoughtfully to the work in front of you. By the end of the course, you'll not only have a beautiful collection of finished collages—you'll also have a repeatable process and the confidence to continue developing your own artistic voice long after the course is over.

Here is What's Included:
|
Module 1: Building Your Stash
Every successful collage begins with a collection of papers to work from. In this module, you'll create the foundation of your collage Stash by printing botanical imagery on tissue paper, exploring intentional colour schemes, and learning how different papers behave within a collage. You'll also discover how to select, prepare, and print a variety of botanicals, organize your growing collection, and build a library of papers that will support every collage you create throughout the course |
|
Module 2: Expanding Your Visual Vocabulary
Now it's time to broaden your Stash with papers that play a supporting role in your collages. You'll create layered accent papers, explore dramatic three-layer printing techniques, experiment with found papers, and discover additional sources of imagery, including stencils, objects, and charcoal or pastel transfers. By the end of this module, you'll have a rich collection of supporting papers that add texture, pattern, and visual interest to your work |
|
Module 3: Starting Simple
Creating your first collage doesn't have to be overwhelming. In this module, you'll learn a straightforward process for selecting papers, reducing creative overload, and building small collages in a sketchbook. Along the way, you'll discover how to identify focal points, create supporting shapes, experiment with layouts, and confidently glue your first compositions together. These small studies provide a relaxed way to develop your collage skills while building confidence in your creative decisions |
|
Module 4: Composition and Design
Strong collages rely on more than beautiful papers—they rely on thoughtful design. In this module, you'll explore the Principles of Design and discover a selection of classic compositional armatures that artists have used for centuries. Through a series of quick collage studies, you'll learn to recognize balance, movement, and focal points while training your eye to make stronger design decisions. These simple exercises will become valuable tools for every collage you create |
|
Module 5: Scaling Up
With a solid foundation in place, it's time to move beyond small studies and create larger, more intentional collages. You'll learn how to select papers with purpose, develop a composition from a favourite design study, use an underpainting to establish structure, and build your collage layer by layer. Along the way, you'll strengthen your understanding of composition while gaining confidence working on larger surfaces and creating more refined, cohesive artwork |
|
Module 6: Responding to Your Collage
Throughout this course, you've built a Stash of collage papers, explored composition and design, and created collages using your own unique materials. In this final module, we'll take the next step by learning how to strengthen and refine those collages. You'll discover how negative tissue prints can become the starting point for entirely new work, rather than simply being leftover prints. We'll explore ways to use paint—not to cover up your collage, but as an editing tool to restore contrast, adjust colour, create depth, and strengthen your focal point. Most importantly, you'll begin to shift from following a process to responding to the work itself. Instead of asking, "What's the next step?" you'll start asking, "What does this collage need?" By the end of the module, you'll have a deeper understanding of how to develop a collage beyond its first layers—and the confidence to make thoughtful creative decisions that help your own visual language emerge |
